So What Are Ketone Supplements and What Do They Do?
Ketone supplements contain the beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) ketone. The other primary ketone, acetoacetate, is too unstable to include in a supplement.
There are two main forms of ketone supplements:
- Ketone salts. These are bound to a salt, usually sodium, potassium, calcium, or magnesium. They’re usually in powder form and dissolved in water.
- Ketone esters. These are bound to compounds called esters and are generally liquids. They’re mainly used in research and aren’t as readily available as ketone salts.
Both forms increase your blood ketone levels, simulating what happens in ketosis when you follow a ketogenic diet.
When you supplement, this increase in blood ketone levels helps you transfer to ketosis without needing to follow a ketogenic diet.
This can also reduce the time to achieve ketosis and decrease some unpleasant effects that can come from changing to a ketogenic diet from a higher carb one.
What Is Ketosis?
Ketosis is the metabolic state during which your body produces ketones from fat and uses them for energy instead of carbohydrates. You can achieve ketosis by following a low carb, high fat ketogenic diet.
It happens when fat provides most of your body’s energy, particularly when you restrict the availability of glucose, your body’s preferred fuel.
To trigger ketosis you generally need to consume less than 50g of carbohydrate per day and sometimes as little as 20g per day. The exact amount, however, varies between individuals.
A ketogenic diet can help you lose weight quickly by reducing your glycogen and water stores. Also, it can suppress your appetite in the long-term, helping you reduce your calorie intake.
When you eat a very low carbohydrate diet, your insulin levels decrease, and your fat stores release significant amounts of fatty acids. Your liver oxidizes these fatty acids to ketones which provide your body with energy.
Ketones can also cross your blood-brain barrier and provide energy for your brain in the absence of glucose. Your brain can use ketones for energy, particularly during starvation or if you’re on a low-carb diet.
Your body can also use protein to produce glucose for the brain during ketosis (gluconeogenesis). Ketosis and gluconeogenesis can fulfil the brain’s entire energy needs, if required.
Furthermore, you tend to feel fuller on a ketogenic diet. Therefore, you generally don’t need to watch your calories as much.
